This was a gift. It was a new thing at the time and a huge waste of someone's money, I am sure. First of all, when the ink runs out, good luck finding a replacement cartridge at all (let alone at a reasonable price for the amount of pictures you get.) It's a pain to print. The way the paper feeds through is weird and sometime I have problems or smudges. You can buy prints online for 15 cents a picture by uploading them to one of the many gallery/print sites. They will be delivered to your door or a nearby by store for next to nothing in a few days. I purchased this printer new a couple of years ago, and was generally very satisfied with it. UNTIL, it started developing printhead problems. Despite all the troubleshooting information that HP provides with its Toolbox, and after many hours of work, I was unable to restore the printer to normal operating function unless I purchased a very expensive printhead. So I did it, ONCE. And it worked fine for a few weeks but then failed again. So I called HP and after a long time on the phone with them, and weeks of waiting I received a new printhead under warranty. Replaced it again, and again after a few weeks, it started with the same problems. (Black ink wasn't printing at all).

I was sick of it, and was about to throw it away, when diagnosing another inkjet printer, I came upon a suggestion to clean the printhead with HOT water. I had tried all kinds of chemicals (pen cleaner, alcohol, and cold water) but had never tried HOT water. It worked like a charm, and restored the functioning of the printer to like new.

So, fix yours if you're having a problem! I don't know why HP wouldn't recommend this, as it is so effective, and I think would improve their customer perception immensely. I've always been a fan of HP, but with a few of their recent products, I have been less than impressed with reliability and support.

I was very impressed with the speed and quality of the color printing when using the standard page sizes. However, when I added the 650 page add on tray in order to get the statement sized paper feeder, (5.5" X 8.5"), the printing slows down to about 8 - 10 ppm. I have been in contact with Lexmark regarding this issue, nothing that I have tried has helped the speed, and I have the feeling that this is simply the best it will do. I still think it is the best printer for the money, but if a business expected to use the statement feeder for volumes of printing, they would be quite disappointed. I got this item for a very steep discount and I'm still not very happy with it. The "zink" paper is truly a breakthrough. It reminds me of old polaroids, but in a different package. Problems: the paper is ridiculously expensive. It's around 50 cents per sheet and by sheet we're talking about 2"x3" or the size of a business card. This paper is very low quality in my opinion. After you print out a picture and peel off the sticker-like adhesive back, you're time is now running. The picture will stick for a short while on whatever surface you decide, but eventually, like a day later, it will start to peel back and "curl" until finally it drops off and is useless. The pictures are grainy, I'm certain that has nothing to do with my camera, the pictures come out with lines in them as well. It doesnt work with the iPhone, which is a drawback, but not everyone uses that phone. It is a great idea, just not perfectly executed yet. Save your money. This is a piece of junk and the manufacturer has recognized that as the price has dropped from $130 down to under $50 in a matter of months. I wanted an all in one laser unit that was as small as possible. Although it has scanning capacities I don't need this since I also have a full size scanner. The print and faxing capabilities are good as I have the unit connected via Ethernet to Win Vista and Mac OS 10 (latest version) computers. I used the Brother install disks for each computer. At one point I lost the network connection on the Mac and had to use the USB port. Later I lost the Vista network connection. I went back and tried setting up the network connections on both computers again and was successful. For whatever reason the Mac couldn't see the printer at one point and then later it could. With the Win computer I just deleted the original Brother icon and Vista found it the next time. I bought this printer several months ago at a great price. When I first brought it home and hooked it up it did not work. I bought it back and got another which to my surprise did not work either. It was giving me a strange error message. I thought perhaps it was my fault, a user error. So to avoid the embarrassment of walking in the store again I called tech support.

The tech support rep walked me through the problem. There was a batch of these printers that when shipped resulted in a loose cable on the internal board itself. He walked me through unscrewing the printer, opening the back, removing a cable and securing it more tightly.

The printer worked GREAT after this. I have been using it to print mostly addresses on envelopes. The included cartridge ran out rather quickly. I assumed this was because it was just a starter cartridge. I purchased a new one which also ran out quickly. After all, I am only printing addresses on envelopes. I wondered why the ink was running out so quickly.

I decided to investigate and take apart the cartridge to see how much toner was actually left. To my surprise the cartridge was nearly 1/4 full!!!! The printer must be programmed to report "empty" when a certain amount of pages have been printed despite how much ink was used. Most printers have an option to circumvent this "quality control" feature. But not this one.

I would warn potential buyers against this printer. It prints wonderfully. But it is designed to have you purchasing toner on a regular basis. This is how printer companies make $$ now. They sell you a cheap printer and get you on toner. The cartridges are also design so that they can not be refilled.
