This is my second dye-sub printer, and it is an improvement in size, noise and speed. The picture quality is similar, which means it is still very good. I opened the box and set everything up quickly, the paper tray and ink only go in one way so it is easy to use.

The problems started when I installed the software. The install was OK, but when I tried to use it I just couldn't find how to get it to print. I am a geek, and build my own machines and play with lots of software, so I can usually work things out, but with this I had to use the last resort of reading the manual. Even then, I only managed to do a simple print, the other features to customize a print were too confusing to even attempt. The next day I wanted to use the printer again, and I couldn't remember the name of the software program in the Start menu, so I had to go back to the install disk and start the install again to work out what it was called. I have another Canon printer which uses a completely different piece of software, which is slightly better, but why doesn't Canon make a standard program for all their printers? This looks like it was thrown together by the hardware engineers with no regard to how a user would use it. I prefer using software that comes with a machine, as it has access to all the features. Its like trying to use a universal remote control, its fine for start/stop/pause but to get into the setup menu you need the manufacturers remote. Now I am just printing from other programs and possible missing out on cool features, but I could not use that program again.

I did not remove any stars as I purchased this printer for the quality of the prints, and that is certainly 5 star.

After a lot of research, I opted for the Epson WorkForce 600. This was a replacement for THREE in a row HP defects. (Sub-note: HP in my opinion has lost its once top-of-the-line quality. I had 3 in a row each - printers and laptops - that were "duds" and HP has lost me as a customer. Thanks for letting me "vent" about this, but it was important to voice my opinion on HP's decline in quality and reliability.)

My new Epson is a high-quality all-in-one machine. The set up was easy (although I am still having trouble with the wireless connection, which for me, is not a priority.) It is a very solid machine, somewhat heavier and larger than others in this class, but for me, this speaks to quality. I have used all of the functions with good results. The printer works great - is fast, the print quality is crisp and clear. Ink use seems a bit more economical than the HPs I have had, and the ink itself is awesome! I read in a review that Epson ink would not smear with a yellow highlighter and it does NOT! Amazing! At first, I was skeptical about the 4 separate ink cartridges, but this is proving to be an economical feature, with the ink cartridges being very easy to replace. (Sub-note: I read in another review that Epson printers will NOT accept generic ink cartridges. I have not tried generics myself, but I wanted to include this as a warning for those who like using generic ink.) The paper holder capacity is small (supposed to be about 100 sheets), but this is not a major issue for me.

On to the fax capability: It basically sends and receives fine. The settings were a bit difficult for me, but I think this is just a matter of getting used to the machine. It also took a couple of tries to get the settings correct with my answering machine, but once this is set correctly it is not something that continually needs to be adjusted. As with most fax machines, you may opt for post fax written reports or not. It has the usual speed dial settings. One feature that I missed from HP machines is the ability to set up the fax from your computer. With the Epson, you need to do settings from the control panel.

Scanning: With the scanner, you can operate it nicely from your computer. It has the usual setting that are easy to input, the scanning is fast and I have had good results with both color and black & white originals.

Copying: Not much to say except that the copy process is very fast using the document feeder. Just set the number of copies you want and the WorkForce does the rest either in color or black and white. The copier has the lift-up top for centering documents/pictures on the copy glass. I want to say again that I am impressed with the Epson ink - the colors are bright and the ink withstands a yellow highlighter without smudging or smearing.

I need to comment on the noise factor: The Epson Workforce 600 is not a quiet machine, but for me this is not an issue. However, you probably want to plan your setup keeping the Epson away from your phone as much as possible. If you are highly sensitive to noise, you may want to look to another brand. Again, for me this is not an issue and would not influence my purchase choice if I knew this before buying it.

To sum up, this is a solid, quality machine - it is heavier and larger than others in this class. Set-up is easy, but I had problems with the wireless connection. It's operating system (meaning the document feeder) is fast although a bit loud. The ink system uses 4 cartridges that are very easy to replace and the ink seems to last longer than my multifunction HP machines. (Another review warned that the Epson would not accept "generic" ink brands, although I have not tried this.) The ink withstands the highlighter test, is clear and bright. All of the functions work very well for me - I am quite pleased with this machine and would definitely buy it again. OVERALL:
Just bought this printer after much deliberation and research. I was mainly an HP person both using their laser at work and inkjet printers at home. I wanted something a bit more economical in the long term than my inkjet, plus I like the sharpness of laser printing and I love double-sided printing. This printer meets all my requirements and it's fast. I worked out that the cost per page based on current cost of the consumables (toner and drum) is about $0.02 (when using the high-yield toner). That's awesome.

SETUP:
Wired set up via USB or Ethernet (Network) is very easy. To set it up wireless was a bit more involved for me (and probably since I'm the type to rarely read the manual). However, after I set it up it's been working flawlessly.

PAGE CURLING:
Some people complain of page curling and I was really concerned about it but I haven't found that to be a problem. Honestly, my HP LaserJet 1320n at work curls more than this thing. Curling is truly minimal when using the correct paper and when it does occur it's easily correctable (turn the pages upside-down and let them "cool down" is my approach).

FOR THOSE WHO WANT BOOKLET PRINTING ON A MAC, PLEASE READ:
One downside is that it does not do booklet printing on a Mac (booklet printing is Windows only), the driver just doesn't support it. However, there are workarounds using 3rd party software & methods that creates the booklet before sending it to the printer. It's not a big deal. One method is to save a document to a PDF using the OS X print menu, open the PDF in the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and printing the booklet from there since Adobe Acrobat Reader supports booklet printing. The process has an extra step but works perfectly. Perhaps in the future Brother will update the OS X driver. Cons:
not quite 4X6 prints (the are slightly smaller)
only holds 18 sheets of paper at atime
Ink and paper is kind of expensive, and not always easy to find.
The highest amount of prints per ink package is 36 (that's the biggest ink ribbon I found).

If you need a true 4X6 printer, then this will not work, and if you need to print large quantities, this is not a good printer for the job.

I have been working with the Epson 1400 large format printer as part of a networked printer bank in a professional design studio for just over a year, and have been impressed with its ability to reliably produce high-quality, accurate large format prints even under heavy use.

Our office uses this printer almost every day for printing proofs of catalogs, product artwork, packaging artwork, mockups to show to product distributors, sales brochures, and other design-related purposes. During crunch times we may run as many as 50-100 large-format prints through this printer in a single day as we update designs and put together proofing documents to send to our printers.

I've worked with a lot of large-format printers over the years both as a design student and a professional, and I'm not impressed easily, but this printer has won my admiration. It has reliably withstood heavy abuse and continued to work properly despite countless network configuration changes, thousands of prints, and a healthy dose of user error.

If you're having trouble getting prints that look like what you see on your screen, make sure that your document is set to a "CMYK" color format and the color rendering for the printer is set to "perceptual." When my office first got our Epson 1400 we were having some trouble getting accurate color rendering until we discovered this, and it makes a huge difference in what prints look like.

For the very best results make sure you use Epson brand paper.
We experimented with some off-brand papers at first and weren't happy with the results. After a lot of trial and error we've found that that the Epson Presentation Paper Matte provides good results for proofing documents, and we occasionally use the stiffer Epson Premium Presentation Paper Matte when we want to cut out packaging designs so we can fold them together to make sure the sizing is accurate.

Like all inkjet printers it uses ink fairly quickly and not all office supply stores carry the ink this printer uses, so it's important to keep backup ink cartridges at all times. Since this printer uses a total of 6 cartridges (Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta, Yellow, Black) this can be a fairly pricey investment, but if you ever find yourself printing with a deadline it's worth it in the long run.

Because of its size and associated costs this isn't an "everyday" kind of printer that should be used for printing e-mails and MapQuest directions, but for design students and professionals who want accurate color rendering from a reasonably-priced printer that is reliable, easy to use, and has great customer support, the Epson 1400 is an excellent choice.

I am a very short time user of this printer, however, this is at least 16th printer I have had at since my first Centronics in 1979, and I have installed many more at work.

The printer is very well packed. The print head comes un-installed. I had a little apprehension putting in the print head. The gray bar that is raised has a stiff spring. It would not be the first time I have pulled something too hard, but there are no locks or catches. It just lifts up. The head went in smooth as did ink installation. The next step is to put power on and wait for the printer to align. This takes some time. The printer werrs, pops, grinds, sounds like it is trying to load paper, but eventually prints, JUST WAIT.

After plugging in the Ethernet cable, the network light came on, and pressing the light got me a network printout. (However, it was not necessary). From here you put the disk in the computer and follow instructions. I installed the printer on three computers, a desktop wired to network, and Asus EEEpc, wireless (copy all files to a usb and run setup from the usb), and a laptop also wireless. The desktop with Vista required me to except port 427, the Asus running XP required nothing, and the Laptop running Vista and Zone Alarm required reconfiguring Zone Alarm. The good thing is the firewall changes required were somewhat explained by the software. The Zone Alarm instructions were better than the Windows FireAlarm instructions.

I have read many of the 'professional' reviews on this printer. Now that I have it installed and have printed several test prints, some thoughts. Print speed, is well within acceptable limits. In fact I read one review that said it was too slow. I disagree with that. I also read that the 'Photo' quality was not good. Well it is certainly good enough. It does make noise, however, it is no worse that most other HP ink jets I have dealt with. It is not a factor for me, but it it were I would pick the Wireless model and stick the thing in a closet somewhere.

I would highly recommend this printer to anyone looking for no frills printing. I particularly like the cost of ink! While I have refilled carts before, at $9.99 for color carts, for 300 pages and $14.99 for 700 pages, I don't think I will mess with it. I've read some positive reviews on this printer and I'm just baffled. Text printing for an inkjet, in my opinion, is just average. It's GREAT if you're comparing to inkjets from 15 years ago, but technology has come a long way since then. Anything more than solid color printing is just plain bad. So bad that I'd rather print in black and white - and I'm not talking about photos - I understand that this is not a photo printer and meant as a small office multifunction device. Printing is extremely slow (I'm used to Canon's mid-end printers, which tend to be faster than the competition) and the auto document feeder is useless - the last inch or two always comes out skewed. Even using the flat scan (directly positioning the paper on glass), the color for even back and white documents are completely off. Grayscale is a little better, but not much - black and white barely even registers anything.

Now - on to their drivers and software. If you're on Vista, I believe you're just out of luck. I know I am - after many, many hours of trying to get things to actually work. I finally got the scanning to work, except I can't save it or export it out, as the software won't allow me to click "finish" and move on to the next step. The shortcut options from the printer so that you can scan? Doesn't work at all. Very poor job on the product management and q&a departments that handled the launch of this printer.

It also has a tendency to "turn itself" on and clean/align the printheads pretty frequently, so you know it's eating up precious ink. I have yet to use its fax functionality, but even if the fax works phenomenally well, I'd still have to rate this at one star. Keep in mind that I have this multifunction as the occasional use printer, as I print 90% of everything on my laser.

Even for the person that only prints several pages per month and scans once in a blue moon, I would not recommend this printer. Go for one of the low end multifunctions from Epson or Canon - or upgrade to HP's high end machines. Generally, I'm a fan of HP items, though I feel they run a bit more expensive than other brands. My laser printer is an HP (P2015) and feel it's printing quality is amazing (it's not perfect, but certainly gets the job done).

I'm very regretful of "upgrading" to this printer from my 8 year old Canon multifunction that I bought for $100 when it was new. It beat this out in every function (though it didn't have faxing).
